Who We Are

The University Alaska Anchorage (UAA) Alaska Native American Indian Science and Engineering Society (ANAISES) chapter believes in the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) mission statement.

We work together to strengthen ourselves and those in our Native community. We support the vision in building a stronger Native America by helping our Naive students to succeed in their academic studies. We believe it is important to work together to get through our classes and help each other by forming study groups for tough classes. We also help new students with various situation's so they can become familiar with the academic lifestyle at the university.

We believe the number one reason were attending the University is to learn from each other, the classroom and to successfully complete our degree program. We use a variety of tool available to help us in this goal. We work together with Native Students Services (NSS), the Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP) and our fellow college students.

What we do

Education - We work together in study groups to help each other get through our tough classes. We tutor and mentor new students in the ANSEP and engineering program. We participate in giving tours to potential students at the University of Alaska, Anchorage and especially the engineering program here.

Membership - We believe in helping the younger students still in high-school and those just entering college so we do presentations at high-schools telling them about AISES and about ANSEP.

Community - We work hard together, study together and have fun together. We work with the ANSEP community as most of our club members are both ANSEP students and AISES members.

Traditional Values - We believe in our traditional values and share our culture and background with each other. A lot of our students are members of their tribal dancing groups. We promote our Native ancestral ways of science and engineering in our presentations to high-school students stressing the natural engineering methods our tribal groups used to survive before modern technology. We point out that our ancestors were natural scientists and engineers using the land and animals to make tools and shelter to survive.
