Objectives: Quality Management includes the processes required to ensure that the product (or project) will satisfy the needs for which it was undertaken. It includes all activities of the management function that determine the strategy, policy, objectives and responsibilities and their implementation. This management class will be loosely based on the body of knowledge required for the ASQ Certified Quality Manager, the eight management principles of ISO 9000 – 2000 and the experience of the participants. It is the objective of this class to leave the student with of an in-depth understanding of quality management field and an understanding of a system based implementation process. Grading:
Class Participation (30%) will be based on attendance (if unable to attend prior notice to instructor is required) and submission of homework and reading reviews. Material will be accepted up to two weeks from assigned date. Percentage grade is based on percent completion of the 14 assignments. The Midterm and Final (15% each) will be based on the knowledge areas for the Certified Quality Manager examination and questions from the reading material and lectures The term project is made up of the presentation (15%) and the term research paper (25%). The presentation is expected to be a PowerPoint presentation of approximately 20 minutes with 10 minutes for question and answer. The paper is expected to be nominally 20 pages in length (double spaced – Time 12 point), excluding the bibliography and any attachments. All writing assignments will be graded on content, organization, creativity and demonstration of knowledge of the subject. No fixed format is required but in general the paper should be suitable for publication. Students are welcome to investigate the requirements for authors for various professional societies (e.g. ASME, AACE, ASQ, IEEE, etc.) and follow those formats. Other sources for format and style are: “A Manual for Writers” by Kate Turabian – University of Chicago Press and “Style – Toward Clarity and Grace” by Joseph Williams – University of Chicago Press.
