The intent of National Engineer’s Week is to heighten public awareness of the engineering professions and to highlight the individual disciplines and fields represented. Just as importantly, it is used to encourage school age children to participate in the many educational programs and opportunities available to prepare for engineering. The National Engineer's Week Competitions are supported by the UAA School of Engineering and engineers from south central Alaska.

Again this year, Engineers’ Week programs include several competitions, planned to encourage participation in Science and Engineering and challenge students at all levels. The contests will be held on the UAA Campus, Anchorage, AK.

For those who have participated in the past, you will notice that the Great Rubber Band Vehicle Distance Competition is missing from this year's line up.  Unfortunately, the university chose to carpet the course and put in fixed tables and chairs that block the course.  We were unable to find an acceptable alternative location in a timely fashion.  So we canceled the event.  At the last minute (2/17/03) we found a place that would have been good, there was no time to get the word out.  So we added a "show-up-and-do" competition:  The Paper Airplane Distance competition.  We are excited about it.  This competition will be complete with age categories and trophies.  Check out the new rules.

REGISTRATION:  There is no early registration.  Just show up the day of the competition and register at the event locations  (see the UAA map on this web site for locations).  All competitions are held simultaneously in a "fair" format.  There is no interschool competition.  Teams for the egg drop and floatable moatable can represent more than one school.  Bridges may be constructed by individuals or small teams.   It is recommended that the students get there early and signup for a time slot in the Floatable Moatable competition as this competition fills up quickly.

AWARDS CEREMONY:  All competitions will be concluded by 2:00 pm and the awards ceremony will be held at 2:30 pm in the UAA Campus Center Cafeteria. Students who cannot stay for the awards ceremony can pick up their trophies from the UAA School of Engineering office during week days after the competition.  If time allows, we will try to drop unclaimed trophies by the schools before the end of the school year.

TROPHIES: Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the Floatable Moatable, Egg Drop, and Airplane Distance competitions for the following categories:

Grades 1-3 (one category)
4-6 (one category)
7-8 (one category)
9-12 (one category)

Trophies will be awarded to the top five finishers in the structural engineering competition.

Recognition (participation ribbons, etc.) will be offered to all that enter.

Teachers are encouraged to help the students form teams and to coach them in preparation for the competitions. Classroom assistance is available to help students prepare for the various competitions.
