Catalog Description

Experimental investigation of the properties of civil engineering materials and the basic principles of mechanics. The development of testing procedures, the use of standard testing procedures, and the interpretation of data are also covered. There is a strong emphasis on technical report writing.

Course Objective

The course includes lectures and laboratory testing of constructional materials. The objectives of the course include: familiarity with the mechanical properties of engineering materials, skill in methods of observation, knowledge of accepted methods of testing, appreciation of the significance of data, strengthened grasp of the principles of mechanics of materials, acquaintance with standards and the technical literature, and ability to report the results of investigations.
