CE 334 – Properties of Materials

Catalog Description

Experimental investigation of the properties of civil engineering materials and the basic principles of mechanics. The development of testing procedures, the use of standard testing procedures, and the interpretation of data are also covered. There is a strong emphasis on technical report writing.

Course Objective

The course includes lectures and laboratory testing of constructional materials. The objectives of the course include: familiarity with the mechanical properties of engineering materials, skill in methods of observation, knowledge of accepted methods of testing, appreciation of the significance of data, strengthened grasp of the principles of mechanics of materials, acquaintance with standards and the technical literature, and ability to report the results of investigations. 

Prerequisite(s)

ES 302 Probability & Statistics. ES 331 Mechanics of Materials or concurrent enrollment

At the conclusion of this course, the students will have:

• an understanding of standard properties of common engineering materials

• an understanding of steel, concrete, asphalt, wood and ice material properties

• an understanding of experimental mechanics of bending of beams, tension and compression tests

• a basic understanding of dynamic effects and environmental corrosion effects on properties of materials

• the ability to conduct experiments in properties of materials in civil engineering

• the ability to analyze and interpret experimental data in properties of materials

• the ability to write technical reports
