Administration, economics, location, construction and maintenance of highways, railways, airports, and other transportation facilities.

Course Objective

This course is designed to give junior civil engineering students the ability to design basic transportation facilities.

Expected Outcomes

At a conclusion of this course, students will have:

• Understanding of the traffic modes: highway-, railroad-, water- and
  air transportation.
• Understanding of vehicle and driver performance needed for highway
  design.
• Ability to design vertical and horizontal alignments for highways.
• Ability to determine capacity of a highway and design a cross sections
  for it.
• Ability to design pavement structures.
• Understanding of use of geosynthetics in transportation applications.
• Ability to forecast traffic in the future.
• Improved ability to design and conduct experiments, and analyze and
  interpret data.
• Improved ability to design a system or component to meet desired
  needs.
• Improved ability to function on teams.
• Improved ability to communicate effectively.

Transportation system; transportation planning; highways and urban transportation; vehicle, traffic and road characteristics; highway design and traffic engineering; vehicle motion and flow models; pavement design; airport design/planning; port and harbor planning; economy and environmental issues, environmental impact studies.
