Principal of foundation action, spread footings, mats, pile foundations, retaining walls and bulkheads, bridge piers, cofferdams and abutments.

Course Objective

This course is designed to give junior civil engineering students the ability to design basic foundations for superstructures..

Prerequisite(s)

CE 435 Soil Mechanics

Expected Outcomes

At a conclusion of this course, students will have ability to design:

• Shallow foundations
• Mat foundations
• Retaining walls
• Sheet pile walls
• Bracing of deep cuts
• Pile foundations including helical piers
• Reinforced earth structures
• Drilled piers and caisson foundations

Topics Covered

Principles of foundation design; design of shallow foundations; design of mat or raft foundations; design of pile foundations; design of drilled pier foundations; design of retaining walls; braced cuts or excavations; bulkhead.
