Catalog Description

Essentials of structural design in Timber.  Building code requirements and standard practice for the design of basic structural elements, connections, and shear wall lateral force resisting systems are covered.

Course Objective

To enable the student to learn the basics of the National Design Specification for Wood Construction and how to apply it to the design of basic structural components, connections, and building systems. The student will also gain a deeper understanding of basic mechanics of materials, structural analysis, and design principles as they apply real world design.

Prerequisite(s)

CE 431 - Structural Analysis with a grade of "C" or better

Expected Outcomes (updated 4/24/04)

At the conclusion of this course, the students will have:

• the ability to apply  the basic requirements of the ANSI/NFoPA National Design Specification for Wood Construction.
• a basic understanding of the design/fabrication/erection sequence and the role of civil/structural engineers in the process
• the ability to design tension members
• the ability to design connections with bolts and nails
• the ability to design simple and continuous beams for shear, flexure, and deflection
• the ability to design columns
• the ability to design beam-columns
• the ability to analyze lateral force resisting systems consisting of wood shear walls
• the ability to design shear walls.
