GRADING:
The final grade will be computed using the formula:
Grade = 10*H +20*P + 40*M + 30*F
Where:
| H = (total earned homework points)/(total available homework points) | |
| P = (total earned project points)/(total available project points) | |
| M = [(Midterm 1 score)/(Midterm 1 available pnts) + (Midterm 2 score)/(Midterm 2 available pnts) + ... = (Midterm N score)/(Midterm N available pnts)]/N | |
| F = (Final Exam Score)/(Final Exam available points) |
Grade ranges: 0 < F < 60, 60 < D < 70, 70 < C < 80, 80 < B < 90, 90 < A < 100
A person earning an "A" grade will be able to work every problem in the covered portions of the text with confidence. Someone that earns a "B" should be able to work the same problems with assistance/supervision. Someone earning a "C" grade has a general idea of the principles involved in solving the problems but would require substantial supervision and additional study/practice before they could work on their own. Someone earning a "D" grade has some concept of what is happening but really needs to go through this course again before they can be expected to apply the principles in practice. An "F" grade would indicate that the person earning it has little idea of the basic principles and procedures covered in the course.
Grade information will be posted on the university's Blackboard system.
GENERAL POLICY:
| My office hours are as listed on my personal information web page and are also posted on the door of my office. There is a 90% chance of finding me in my office during my office hours. There are occasional times at which other duties will make it impossible for me to be in my office or I will step out for a few minutes. Check with the secretary if I am not in when you come. You may also stop by to ask questions whenever my door is open and I am in, regardless of the time. I will also make appointments for times other than my office hours. |
| Assignments are due at the end of class on the dates shown. Solutions to the problems will be posted in blackboard before the assignment is due. Students are expected to check their own work and consult with the instructor for clarifications as needed before the work is submitted. Assignments that are not neatly done, are incomplete, or incorrect will not be counted as being submitted and must be resubmitted when properly completed. Assigned problems that are properly completed and submitted on time may receive 5 points per problem. Assigned problems that are properly completed and received within one week of the submission deadline will receive 3 points per problem. Properly completed homework submitted more than one week late may receive 1 point per problem. Assignments will not be received after the final exam. See the instructor for help if you are having troubles arriving at the correct solution. |
| The homework assigned represents a minimum exposure to the principles and procedures taught in this course. You may need to work additional problems to fully grasp the principles taught. It is expected that the well prepared student will average 6 hours a week (outside of class) on homework and outside assignments for this course. |
| Attendance is required only during exams, but you will be held responsible for all material and information presented in class. I will only review a lecture if it was missed for circumstances beyond the control of the student. If you know in advance that you will not be able to make an exam, you must make arrangements to take it early. I will only allow a student to take an exam late for reasons that are unexpected and beyond the control of the student. Alternate exams will be different from the one given in class. Vacations, other recreational activities, and preplanned events are not considered to be beyond the control of the student. |
